Rachel Mayer Furman received her B.A. in Communication and Rhetoric from DePaul University in Chicago, IL. Additionally, she volunteered for Senator Paul Simon’s successful and final, re-election campaign. After graduating, she became an Assistant Debate Coach for one year at DePaul University, while she was employed as a Volunteer Coordinator for a targeted State Representative Campaign. After such time, she moved to Pittsburgh to go to graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh. Rachel joined the Communication Department at Carlow University in the fall of 2009.

At this time, she became the inaugural Tom Hopkins Communication Lab (HCL) Director. Within five years, the HCL earned a brand new, state-of-the art facility in the University Commons building, the first LEED certified building on campus. The HCL lab has 17 part-time student workers and serves the entire community, bringing awareness and high-impact practices to the students at Carlow University.
